Training & coaching philosophy
My knowledge of nutrition, metabolism, physiology and anatomy gained from formal education, combined with almost 10 years of self experimentation in my personal endurance training and racing, enables to me to help endurance athletes of all abilities to reach their maximum potential by improving every aspect of an athlete’s training.
I truly believe that to reach your peak potential as an athlete you must develop a solid foundation of healthy behaviors including healthy eating habits, getting enough sleep, having the right mental approach to training, and being able to balance training with quality rest, all while maintaining the other aspects of your life. These are the hardest things for athletes to establish but once this foundation is set, the training is simple.
My major objective is to work with each of my clients one on one to help them reach their optimal performance level and establish a clear plan to achieve their goals. I individualize every aspect of the training program for each athlete because no two are alike.
Background
I have been physically active my whole life from starting with strength training, at 9 months doing push-ups, so my parents say. I skipped base training and jumped right into intervals; when I first stood on my own I would run until I lost my balance and fell, only to get up and do it again. This marked the clumsy beginnings of endurance training.
Growing up, I was involved in almost every team sport imaginable and I developed an interest in health, nutrition and exercise which became a passion that determined the path I would take in college, my career, and as an athlete from then to now
In college I played soccer at the Division 1 level before beginning my career as an endurance athlete. During which I spent a lot of time in the weight room learning how to lift to increase sport specific strength and also dedicated myself to training for body building competitions. These experiences combined with my personal training certification enables me to keep athletes healthy and increase their performances by designing functional strength programs.
While pursuing an undergraduate degree in nutrition I put what I was learning in the classroom to work on myself as an elite endurance athlete, and learned far more through self experimentation than my peers, with their books alone. By graduation I had raced in the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii three times, Duathlon World Championship in Austria, run three other regular marathons, and raced almost 100 other endurance events.
To supplement a B.S in nutrition and personal training experience, I am a certified Health Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine.
Currently I am working on a master’s degree in physiology, while training and racing at an elite level in multi-sport events. In 2007 my focus will be on bicycle racing.
TrainingPeaks.com
I use TrainingPeaks.com to coach my athletes. This web based program allows me to develop clear personalized plans showing daily, weekly, and yearly periods of training. Each client can track their track their training, nutrition, and fitness over time and provide instant feedback for every workout I develop.
TrainingPeaks.com software provides a valuable nutrition component that if taken advantage of will allow athletes to track their food intake and analyze their nutrient intakes compared with their daily training. Easy to understand charts and graphs provide clear feedback to help athletes visualize what they are eating and easily see if they are meeting the requirements of their training.
Plans I develop are based on the latest scientific data and follow an objective approach focused on specific goals of each athlete. By taking an analytical approach to training I remove guesswork and design optimal programs that focus on improving weaknesses, further developing strengths, and providing race specific workouts in a clear, easy to follow format.
